The Betel plant (Piper betle) is a perennial, evergreen vine from the Piperaceae family, which also includes pepper and kava. Known for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and white catkin flowers, the plant originates from South and Southeast Asia. Betel leaves are highly valued for their mild stimulant and medicinal properties. They are traditionally consumed as betel quid or paan, often combined with tobacco, which creates a psycho-stimulating and euphoric effect—though this combination is associated with negative health impacts. Widely used across Asia and among Asian communities worldwide, the betel plant holds cultural as well as therapeutic significance.
Care:
- Place the Betel Leaf Plant in bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light. It can handle partial shade but should be protected from harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf burn. Ideal spots include east or north-facing windows or shaded balconies.
- Water the Betel Leaf Plant when the top inch of soil feels dry, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use a well-draining pot to avoid waterlogging. Adjust watering frequency—2–3 times a week in summer and once a week in winter, based on humidity levels.
The pot shown is for illustration purposes only; the plant comes in a standard grow bag.
